Visy Cares Link Centre, Laverton
Outreach services at the Visy Cares Centre, Dandenong revealed there were significant numbers of young people in the area who were neither enrolled at school nor working, even though they were within the age group required to attend school.
Further analysis identified the need for a transition centre where these young people could have counselling, learn life skills and some academic subjects in an environment of strong support. A community group developed a plan and a pilot program was started in Springvale. The Victorian Government and Visy Cares provided the capital funds for this pilot program and The Pratt Foundation funded the study and evaluation of the program by the Australian Catholic University.
Following the success of the pilot transition program the services were relocated to an area of greater need at Laverton, a western suburb of Melbourne. The Visy Cares Link Centre is now located in refurbished, transportable classrooms in the grounds of the Laverton Secondary College. The Visy Cares Link Centre is suitable for up to 25 young people at any time.
The Australian and Victorian governments have contributed to this program.
